Crossing to Block Island, Rhode Island (US east coast)

block island rhode islandSome of the images from a Google Earth/maps series I'll be posting at the Google Earth bbs for Block Island, Rhode Island, a small and lovely island about six miles of the New England (US) coast.

Double click the image to enlarge it.

The crossing from Port Judith, Rhode Island is a cakewalk if the seas and winds are down. Should the weather change after you land, you can always return to the mainland on the ferry .

block island rhode islandIn the fall, at the island's northernmost tip, there's a lively rip that orbits the island's recurving sandspit which, in typical littoral fashion, is ever changing in length and shape, to the extent that the northern lighthouse is less and less in optimal position.

The kayak fishing at the rip can be terrific, especially on bluefish and striped bass.

Less to the point, an innkeeper on the island [link forthcoming] houses an exotic animal menagerie that includes - no kidding - camels and kangaroos.

I've kept annotated bicycle maps for myself over the years that have become as precious to me as a family bible. How nice to see that you can do the same thing for kayaking and then share them with the world! These images are lovely and, I'm sure, quite helpful to those who will be traveling to Block Island.
